Tom Dacey is always on the go for charitable causes.

When Thomas Dacey graduated from North Haven High School in 1984 there was not a dry eye among those who watched.

Dacey, whose cerebral palsy has forced him to spend most of his life in a wheelchair, garnered more applause than any other member of his class when he walked across the dais. He even received a standing ovation.

“It was a great joy for me,” Dacey said.

For Dacey, walking those few steps took determination. And a year of practice.

But the thrill of walking up to get his diploma was eclipsed by the joy Dacey felt when he learned that it resulted in a scholarship fund in his name to help a graduating senior the following year. Dacey carries that joy with him daily and it is that which has led him to devote so much time to helping others.

“I look at every day as a blessing,” Dacey said. “That’s why I thrive on helping others. There are always people out there that have it worse than I do.”

Dacey is in his 16th year hosting his cable access television show. “Talking with Tom,” airs on NHTV Cable 18 in North Haven.

While Dacey describes his show as “general interest,” he features non-profit organizations and does a generous amount of fund raising. He is looking forward to a July 25 fundraiser to benefit Tri-Town Special Olympics.

While details are still developing, he knows it will be held at Jake’s, 179 Center St., in Wallingford, from 2 to 8 p.m. So far Dacey has a couple of local bands and a friend who does karaoke donating their talents for the cause.

Dubbed the “Wallypalooza,” the event began five years ago when Dacey met a mother and daughter who suffered from Arnold-Chiari Syndrome. Dacey was so touched by their plight he started the fundraiser to raise money for their surgery. Each year the event benefits a different cause.

This year’s event will feature an added twist.

“I will run a little promotion myself,” Dacey said. “I’ve got two buckets to pass around. They’re either for me to sing or not to sing. Whichever bucket gets the most money I have to do. So that should be fun.”

Prior events have benefited United Cerebral Palsy and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Dacey also participates in Light the Night each fall to benefit the Connecticut Chapter of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. He notes that Dr. Mel Goldstein, of News Channel 8 fame, has served as honorary chairman for the past 10 years.

“We were under a severe thunderstorm watch,” Dacey said of a prior year’s event. “But Dr. Mel said, ‘A little rain never hurt anybody.’ He was quite an inspiration to everybody.”

Dacey, who grew up in North Haven, has lived in Wallingford for 13 years. He has five older brothers and three older sisters who live in the area.

"Talking With Tom" returns to NHTV-Cable 18 in North Haven.
Will start it's 16th year of Production in January!

After doing my show in Wallingford for the past 8 years, I will be returning to the station where it all started almost 16 years ago. The show will be co-produced and directed by Walter Mann. Ed McCarver A.K.A. "Goober" will still be my co-host in North Haven. I will still be airing a few live shows in Wallingford of course. I will continue my Annual Superbowl Show, Celebrate Wallingford and the Annual Wallypalooza.

Those in Wallingford will be able to view my shows on this blog withing 48 hours of the live broadcast. Also, a few selected shows will be taped and aired on WPAA-TV 18.

I am looking forward to starting my 16th year on January 5, 2010 starting with my Annual Anniversary show. The show will have clips from prior shows, re-caps and some good laughs. Of course, my good friend LuAnn Leclerc, A.K.A. "Old Reliable" will also be joining me for a few of the North Haven shows. I am also fortunate to have my intern Chris join us as a crew member in North Haven. The live air time will still be on the first Tuesday of every month, but the time will now be from 8:00 PM to 9:00PM.

Can you Give Tina a Hand and Give Foster a Loving Home.

My mother (Linda Pelletier) has a dog named Foster (see attached). He is a 3 year old pure bread Australian Sheppard. My father purchased him for my mother when he was a puppy for a mothers day gift 3 years ago. Unfortunately over the passed 2 years our family has suffered many hardships with the most important being the sudden passing of my father on April 19, 2007 due to a rare form of Liver Cancer.

Since his passing my mother has been forced to leave her home that she made with my father and has struggled to find a place to live that is within her price range that will accept dogs of his size. We have done several postings on many blogs & websites, put up flyers at all of our places of employment, scheduled appointments with those who are interested but no one has followed through with meeting Foster. He is currently on a very long waiting list with the Aussie Rescue League however, my mom has been forced to make the decision of bringing Foster to the Newington Humane Society Tomorrow (April 24th) at 1:30pm. Newington has an opening and at this point in time she has to take it.

I'm writing to you for a last plea to help me & my family to find a good home for Foster. He is such an important asset to our family and it pains all of us to know that we will have to give him away to a Shelter, not knowing where he is going and not knowing if he will be okay. I know this may be a lot to ask but would it be possible to feature Foster this evening or Tomorrow Morning?

Zandri takes e-matters into his own hands

Jason Zandri works on one of the many computers in his home office in Wallingford Wednesday. He has created a community Web site for Wallingford, shown on the top monitor, because he saw needs that the town is not filling with its own site.
WALLINGFORD - Jason Zandri got fed up waiting for change, so he took matters into his own hands."It's your town. You live here. You pay your taxes. You consume the services ... Get informed - get involved," reads the home page on Zandri's two-month-old Web site, www.wallingford.us.com.While it may sound like an official domain name, Zandri's site is not to be mistaken for the town's official Web site, www.town.wallingford.ct.us.Zandri spent close to 100 hours building the site, he said, which includes budget information, agendas and meeting minutes, video recordings of Town Council and Planning and Zoning Commission meetings, and a host of other information not available on the town's site. A spreadsheet listing postal and e-mail addresses for state lawmakers may also be found on the site."I'm not planning to move, so I'm gonna be here at least for the next 20 years. So all of these things today affect me and my kids for the next 20 years," said Zandri, the father of three children aged 7 months to 4 years.Zandri said he's always been somewhat interested in local government, which is no surprise given that his father, Geno Zandri, served as a town councilor for 10 years before being defeated by current mayor William W. Dickinson Jr. in the 1999 mayoral race.Jason Zandri is present at just about every Town Council meeting and ran for the council in 2007 as an unaffiliated candidate, but has since rejoined the Democratic Party.Zandri has been asking the town to post minutes online for three years now, he said. "The bottom line is the mayor just doesn't want to do it. We've got a state law that says you've got to do this," said Zandri, referring to House Bill 6502, which calls for local governments to post minutes online.During a Town Council meeting several months ago, Zandri voiced his opinions on the issue. "I had a meeting, and the mayor's like, 'This is very difficult.' I was like, 'Listen, I'll bring my laptop right there and it will take me five minutes,' " Zandri said.That night, Zandri went home and registered the domain name and began the process of creating his Web site, which has received close to 200 visits to date, he said.
Creating and managing a Web site may come easy to Zandri, who works in information technology for Microsoft. He spends anywhere from two to four hours every week updating the Web site with local events, minutes, agendas and news stories.Zandri believes that cities and towns should post as much information online as possible to inform the public. "People often wonder why younger generations don't get involved, why we're not tied into community the way our parents and grandparents were," Zandri said."You're making an obstacle for people that may not otherwise get involved."As far as Wallingford's mayor is concerned, the entire town is not communicating online. "The most common form of communication still would be the telephone or someone in person," said Dickinson, noting that residents are still able to obtain the information by calling the government and asking for it. But Zandri points out that many people work during the day and are not able to spend the extra time during business hours to obtain information, but should still have the option to visit a Web site on their own time.Internet access in Town Hall departments has been a concern for years, as only a few offices have access to e-mail and the World Wide Web."It's a question of cost," Dickinson said. "We're facing some unbelievable issues of cost. With the economy the way it is, everything that adds cost has to go through a pretty severe testing and justification."Dickinson does not have an issue with anyone making information accessible online. "People can put whatever they want online. It's their Web site," he said. Dickinson is, however, concerned about accuracy once information is posted on the Web. "Who put it there? For what reason? Was anything changed?" Dickinson said.Both Democrats and Republicans on the Town Council feel it is a good idea for residents to post relevant information online. "The more information that's out there, the more transparent government can be," said Republican Jerry Farrell Jr.For Republican Rosemary Rascati, it's a decision that the mayor should make, and Robert F. Parisi, also a Republican, says he has seen a lot of abuse of the Internet. "It's kind of a tossup," said Parisi, regarding the idea of Internet access in Town Hall departments.Democrat Vinny Testa believes the town is drastically behind the times from a technological standpoint and losing opportunities to improve efficiencies."I'm even for going even further, to allow bill paying to be done online," Testa said.Jeffrey Knickerbocker, a Democrat who serves as chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Charter Revision Commission, joked that he was "a little creeped out" that his videos were on Zandri's site.Knickerbocker said the Web site is useful and that he has used it himself as a starting point to search for charter information.A self-taught computer whiz, Zandri received his GED having never completed required coursework to graduate with his class at Sheehan High School. He says he doesn't have any extra money to dedicate to the Web site, but he has the spare time and is willing to put up anything he finds both "relevant and public."shernandez@record-journal.com(203) 317-2266

FORMER WPAA HOST SIGNS HBO DEAL

MICHAEL Buckley is the Great White Hope of YouTube.

Thirty-three years old, based in the middle of nowhere in Connecticut, freshly signed to an HBO development deal - and now it's the last day at his "What do you do for work-work?" day job, ever.

The man is doing handstands. Literally.

"I'm not an actor who stood in line for auditions," says the superquick-talking, shotgun-laughter-firing Internet sensation behind the "What the Buck" comedy show on YouTube, which is right after Miley Cyrus in terms of popularity (he's at 257,547 subscribers; she's at 257,648).

Starting today, he is one of 10 top Web celebrities who will be featured in a new online HBOlab series (a unit of HBO) called "Hooking Up," which brings together the biggest self-made stars on the Internet at hookingupshow.com.

"I made my own path from scratch, and I take great pride in that," Buckley says of his always over-the-top celeb-skewering show, which includes the occasional Miley Cyrus-challenging, Internet-wide dance battle. "It's not like people are on YouTube looking for a 30-year-old gay guy. They're looking for women with breasts and cat videos."

Which might explain how most people arrive at his most popular video ever - viewed more than 8 million times - which consists of him freaking out and shrieking as he watches an infamous porn video involving two girls and a cup.

"Buck is someone you couldn't write if you tried," explains James Bozzi, the marketing director at Live Nation, the concert promotion company where Buckley is now packing up his final things and the marquee out front reads, "GOOD LUCK BUCK."

"It's not a character you play," Bozzi continues. "It's not like Sean Hayes playing a gay guy on 'Will & Grace.' Look at Buck's office. It's like a comic book exploded in there. It's like a kaleidoscope of insanity."

Buckley's work space is now mostly empty. Once peppered with Wonder Woman, "Charlie's Angels," "Evita" and "I Love Lucy" images, what remains is his symbolic "Mary Tyler Moore"-esque oversized silver "M" and a door covered in well-wishing notes, such as "Scarecrow, I think I will miss you most of all."

Although compared to Perez Hilton by The Hollywood Reporter's Reel Pop blog and called by Gawker "The Breathless Gossip Vlogger Who Will Replace Us All," Buckley says of his snarkaholic celebrity trashing: "I don't want to ruin anyone's life. I just enjoy being silly."

His silliness has real ramifications, however. Several subscribers have actually posted their own "responses" in which they write that they never used to like gay people.

Until they watched Buckley.

Inside the small room where he records his videos - with a slab of cloth in the background in lieu of a professional green screen, a $2,000 Canon GL2 video camera and a stack of black-and-white head shots - Buckley has recorded more than 400 episodes of his show.

"His work ethic is just unbelievable," observes Fran Shea, general manager of HBOlab.

Buckley, she says, reminds her of another insatiably ambitious young talent she worked with years ago.

"I ran E! for the first nine years in programming, and that's the kind of work ethic that I saw in Greg Kinnear," she says. "Greg would come in with a million ideas - and an ability to get them done."

As Buckley stands in the hallway of the Live Nation offices surrounded by huge black-and-white photos of celebs from Chris Rock to Jerry Seinfeld to Robin Williams, his now former colleague Bozzi says, "We're going to have to put a picture of Buck on these walls soon."

Buckley just poses and postures as a camera snaps him.

"I watch 'Top Model.' ," he says, grinning widely. "Smile with your eyes. Don't waste the magic."

Bucking for multimedia stardom

WALLINGFORD — Michael Buckley describes his job as “full-time Internet personality,” but don’t laugh — at least, not at his job.
Buckley, of Wallingford, created the fourth-most-viewed You Tube comedy videos of all time, w i t h m o r e than 95 mi l l i o n views of his celebrity-mocking “What the Buck” show since 2006. He got a front-page spot on the You Tube site in 2007.
“That was the turning point,” Buckley said.
From his home, Buckley produces his own show, writes his own scripts and even made his own green screen with a piece of green fabric from Wal-Mart. He learned how to use video editing software and camera techniques from You Tube videos.
Buckley hosts the one-man show from behind a desk, offering caustic or funny commentary on the latest celebrity event or mishap, although he does on occasion branch out into sports or politics.
“I’ve always had a punch line, even when I was a kid,” he said. His commentary is not spontaneous, though. Every line is scripted, although Buckley works hard to maintain a natural, impromptu delivery. He said he is very critical with his own work, redoing scripts if he doesn’t think they’re funny enough.
“It used to take me eight hours to make a five-minute video,” he said, adding that he now usually prepares a script in four hours. The show comes out every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
His popularity on the Internet caught the attention of HBO, which hired him to create a show. The show is still in the planning stages, Buckley said.
He also does speaking engagements with companies trying to understand the new media platforms.
Local residents might recognize Buckley from his position as co-host of the cable access show “Table for Two,” which ran from 2005 to earlier this year. The show had a similar format to “What the Buck,” and Buckley said the cable show provided experience with production skills that he used for his You Tube videos.
“That’s where I really honed my craft,” he said.
Kristin Baltramaitis, a sixth-grade teacher at Dag Hammarskjold Middle School and Buckley’s co-host on “Table for Two,” said he works “amazingly hard.”
“It’s nice to see someone doing what they love and get paid for it,” she said. Baltramaitis and Buckley have known each other for years, and balanced each other on the cable show.
“I would kind of keep him in check,” Baltramaitis said. Despite his popularity, Buckley doesn’t have aspirations to stardom.
“I don’t want to be a celebrity. I enjoy talking about them,” he said. “I’m not trying to please the stars.”
Not many people are able to replicate, or even approach, Buckley’s success — but plenty are trying. According to You Tube statistics, 10 hours of video is uploaded to the site every minute. Posting videos or creating an account on You Tube is free, and anyone on the planet with Internet access and a camera can create a video.
“It’s a jungle,” Buckley said of the competition.
You Tube members trying to break out of the pack post on Buckley’s site and ask him to comment on their videos. The requests aren’t just the Internet version of asking for an autograph. Within the You Tube community, comments and endorsements by successful members is crucial to being noticed.
“You make friends and alliances,” Buckley said. “It’s very personal relating with people on the Internet.”
A large part of Buckley’s job as an Internet personality is to do social networking — watching other people’s videos and commenting on them. He reached a turning point, he said, when he started seriously pursuing networking. Buckley’s You Tube page now has more than 270,000 subscribers — other You Tube members who receive alerts when Buckley posts a new video.
“The key to my success is being active on the site,” he said.
While Buckley works hard on his scripts, it is his energetic and over-the-top personality that keeps people watching, he said, pointing to one of his videos.
“It has 24,000 views — it’s just me saying I go to the bathroom,” he said. Buckley has begun video blogging, “vlogging,” about his life to increase that personal connection with his audience.
According to Alexander Halavais, assistant professor of communications at Quinnipiac University, success on You Tube requires interaction with other members.
“That’s true among all the social media. Becoming famous among dozens is where you get your start,” Halavais said. “Especially in the early stages, it’s vital.”
Internet videos are able to gain momentum when they “go viral,” that is, when they gain popularity through sharing. Certain videos have been seen by hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions, due to inscrutable factors that Buckley tries to replicate.
“If I want a lot of hits, and I do, I’ll mention Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers,” Buckley said, referring to celebrities popular with 13- to 17-year-olds, who make up 50 percent of Buckley’s audience. Sixty-five percent of Buckley’s viewers are girls.
“You know, girls love celebrity gossip and a camp gay guy,” Buckley said. Buckley, who is openly gay, he said he has gotten messages from people saying he is the first gay person they had met.
“I get letters from teenagers saying, ‘You changed my perception of gay people,’ ” he said. Buckley said perseverance is important in gaining popularity on You Tube.
“You can’t just post one video. I posted at least 100 videos before anyone knew who I was,” he said. Although some videos, particularly of animals doing funny things, get lots of views, Buckley said everyone has to pick a genre or style that works for him or her.
“By all means, if you have a cat, use it.”

WALLINGFORD — Tom Dacey has always taken pride in his reputation as a charitable man with a ton of hometown spirit. With the help of some friends, he has now taken those initiatives to another level.
On Sunday afternoon, Dacey and sponsors from around the town hosted the third annual Wallypalooza at Willy D’s Indoor Kart Racing, 25 North Plains Highway. Although hot weather kept the number of participants down, Dacey said he was excited, and sponsorship helped make the event as successful as it has been in past years.
“This event is all about having fun and making some money for charity in the process,” Dacey said. “Whatever we make will help others and the event itself provides some entertainment options for those who live in town.”
Different businesses have hosted the three Wallypaloozas, and proceeds from each event have benefited a different charity, Dacey said. All proceeds from Wallypalooza 2008, including a donation of 10 percent of all sales from Willy D’s on Sunday, will be presented to the Muscular Dystrophy Association during the Jerry Lewis Telethon on Aug. 31. James Brice, driver of car 13 for Smokey’s Racing team, provided a hands-on opportunity for event goers to experience a race car first hand, and his demonstrations brought many smiles. He said the event gave him, his crew chief, Jay Kennedy, and his 12-year-old daughter Kaitlyn, a dirt track racer, a chance to share their passion and bring a smile to the faces of local residents.
“To see the people smile, especially those who have lived with a disease like muscular dystrophy, you just can’t put it into words,” Brice said.
For people like Christopher Borchert of Meriden, an intern on Dacey’s cable program “Talking with Tom” who has cerebral palsy, this year’s event was just as good as last year’s and gave him opportunities he might not otherwise have had.
“I’ve been waiting since last year for this event and it didn’t disappoint,” Borchert said. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s a way for guys like me to get out of the house for a few hours and do something we might not normally have the chance to.”
It’s no surprise that Dacey, who also has cerebral palsy, would be so passionate about supporting causes that include United Cerebral Palsy, which the 2007 Wallypalooza benefited. What is surprising is that his own cause was not what motivated him to put the inaugural event together.
Volunteer Luann Leclerc, a friend of Dacey for years, said it was actually the story one mother told of the challenges of having a daughter with ArnoldChiari syndrome. He was so touched by her story that Dacey immediately organized the first Wallypalooza to raise money for research and treatment.
Although he has his own challenges, Dacey said the story really hit home and that each year since, he has made an effort to help a different medicalbased charity. Next year, the event will support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.“ I have my condition, but I’ve said many times before that I don’t consider myself handicapped,” Dacey said. “There are so many people out there who have it far worse than I do and really, I just hope these events will provide them with some relief.”

Charter petition being turned in
WALLINGFORD - The group collecting signatures to force the creation of a charter revision commission has begun turning in its paperwork to the town clerk.

The group began submitting pages of signatures Wednesday and is expected to turn in the final sheets early next week.

Robert Gross, who has been actively collecting signatures, said the group will have the roughly 2,500 signatures needed to force the creation of a charter revision commission.

Gross and other residents began a petition drive after a vote by the Town Council to begin a charter revision commission failed.

Petitioners must obtain signatures from at least 10 percent of registered voters to force the creation of a revision commission.

If the petition is deemed successful by the town clerk, the Town Council will meet to appoint a commission, said council Chairman Michael Brodinsky, a Democrat who supports charter revision.

Republican councilors have spoken out against charter revision as a politically motivated process to undermine mayoral power. Brodinsky and residents circulating petitions say the charter simply needs a review.

WALLINGFORD — People will be racing karts for more than just the excitement at next month’s Wallypalooza.

The third annual Wallypalooza will be held Sunday, July 20 at Willy D’s Indoor Kart Racing to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Tom Dacey, who started Wallypalooza three years ago, said he chose MDA as this year’s recipient because he lost two close friends to the disease, Billy Fruin and Mary DeMatteo, in 1979 and 1980. Wallypalooza benefited a mother and a daughter with a genetic disorder in its first year and the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Southern Connecticut in its second year. Dacey was born with cerebral palsy.

Dacey plans to present the money raised this year at the Party for a Cure fundraiser at Zandri’s Stillwood Inn this September. Party for a Cure, a popular annual fundraiser, raises money for MDA.

Wallypalooza started small, but has grown and the community has been supportive, said Dacey, who has been soliciting donations from local businesses.

“A lot of the businesses I went to have already committed to donating items to the silent auction,” he said, “and a lot of the businesses on Center Street have signs in their windows.”

This is the first year Wallypalooza will be held at Willy D’s, at 25 North Plains Highway. One of the business’s partners, Bill Doucette, has been a long-time supporter of Dacey’s public access show, “Talking with Tom.” Doucette and his partners agreed to donate the use of the facility for the event.

“It’s a matter of being able to share and give something back to the community or MDA,” he said.

The indoor track features competitive performance karts and kids karts, he said. A portion of all proceeds from kart races during Wallypalooza will go to MDA. LuAnn Leclerc, volunteer coordinator for the event, helped set up Laps for the Cure, in which people who raise $50 or over for MDA will receive a free race.

Anyone who wants to raise funds for Laps for the Cure should call Leclerk at (203) 715-2036. Other Wallypalooza activities will be held outside Willy D’s. A number of bands will play and food donated by local restaurant Tata’s will be provided. There will also be a number of children’s activities, such as a moonwalk and face painting.

“We have more support now that people know what it is,” Leclerk said, “and they know what Tommy is doing, so it’s grown considerably from the first year.”

The event will run from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets to the outside activities are $15 per person and $25 for two people. Children under 10 are free. Tickets can be purchased at Willy D’s or Tata’s, at 104 Quinnipiac St. If it rains, the outside activities will be moved indoors. Dacey is available at (203) 697-9292.

Wallingford to raze 1 building, seek more bids to sell another

WALLLINGFORD — The Town Council Tuesday dealt with two historic buildings owned by the community, voting to tear down one and to reject a bid on the other by a community group that wants a public access cable television headquarters in the building.

The council voted 6-2, with one abstention, to authorize Mayor William Dickinson Jr. to tear down 390 Center St. It also authorized the transfer of $80,000 from a general account to cover the demolition.

The council then rejected a bid by the Wallingford Public Access Association to acquire 41 S. Main St.

The WPAA, which runs the town’s public access channel, had come before the council in March. It submitted the only response to a council request for proposals for the former American Legion building, which has fallen into disrepair.

The building at 41 S. Main St. is on the National Register of Historic Places. WPAA had committed to paying at least $10,000 for the building, with improvements to be paid for through a mortgage.

But a majority of the council wasn’t convinced that the group’s plans for financing the purchase were secure enough, and decided Tuesday to continue marketing the property, this time using a real estate agent.

“Where this proposal falls short is the resources, the funding,” said Vincenzo Di Natale, a Democratic councilman who voted to reject the WPAA proposal.

The council’s vote on 390 Center St. clears the way for Wiese Construction of Norwich, which submitted a bid of $75,000 plus a $10-per-gallon charge for any liquids found, to dismantle the building.

It was constructed in the late 1800s but has been vacant since the early 1990s. It is strategically located adjacent to another site the community owns: the 2.9-acre Wooding-Caplan property. Demolishing 390 Center St. would provide easier access to the Wooding-Caplan property.

Republican Councilman John LeTourneau, who voted against the demolition of 390 Center St., favored waiting until a study determines whether a new police station can be built on the Wooding-Caplan property or the current station expanded onto the land.

But Democratic Councilman Vincent Testa said that regardless of the decision made about the police station, 390 Center St. would need to come down to provide better access to the property.

“I don’t think there’s anything to be gained by waiting,” Testa said. “It’s only going to slow us down.”

WALLINGFORD — Tuesday night the Wallingford Public Access Association lost its bid to purchase the former American Legion Building adjacent to Town Hall when the Town Council turned the proposal down by a 7-2 vote.

Proponents of the WPAA offer said that decision could lead to the building’s demolition.

The council rejected the idea by approving a motion by Chairman Mike Brodinsky, with councilors Jerry Farrell Jr. and Michael Spiteri opposed. The motion had been tabled from a March 25 council meeting after lengthy discussion by the public and the council, prompting Brodinsky to call the vote without further comment from the WPAA or the public.

At the heart of the issue for the Town Council was the financial strength of public access Channel 18, which was tied to the inability of the WPAA to provide financial information beyond the purchase price, such as what funds would be available to renovate the building, which is in disrepair. “We have a real estate deal to consider,” Brodinsky said. “Even if we look at this proposal with sympathetic eyes, this proposal is not strong enough to meet with approval at this time.”

Councilor Vincent Di Natale described the WPAA budget as a “grey area” when voicing concern about the organization. Susan Huizenga, co-leader of the WPAA community building team, expressed shock at Di Natale’s perception of the budget. The WPAA was willing to pay the town 30 percent of its $72,000 budget, as part of the cost to purchase the property, but Huizenga said that through a mortgage the WPAA would have been able to cover a purchase price of $200,000. She said the WPAA board was hesitant to take out a mortgage at the current 8 percent interest rate, and without knowing the outcome of the vote did not want to commit to a financial deal.

Most exasperating for Huizenga and her supporters, she said, was the lack of negotiation with the Town Council.

“They never asked us to prove that we had the money,” Huizenga said. “They just assumed” the WPAA didn’t have sufficient funds.

After the council passed on the WPAA offer, the question was put to the council whether to put the property up for sale through a real estate agent, or slate it for demolition.

A vote of 5-4 favored putting the building up for sale, with Brodinsky casting the deciding vote. Also voting in favor of the sale were Farrell, Spiteri, John Letourneau and Vincent Testa Jr.

Councilors Robert Parisi and Rosemary Rascati said the town may regret losing control of a property abutting the town hall. “I don’t want anyone to have it,” Parisi said. “I want it to come down.”

Testa voiced the majority opinion: “I would much rather see the building be used, but it has to make more sense than what we’ve seen so far,” he said. Huizenga said she fears that putting the property up for sale will raise troublesome conditions such as the presence of lead paint, asbestos and water damage, which may make a potential buyer wary of paying a price the council deems viable.

Viewing the April 8 broadcast of the town council meeting it is apparent the new computer system coming to the town has the capability for direct deposit. Teachers at Lyman Hall overwhelmingly support adding direct deposit as an option to receive our pay. When we learned that Wallingford now has the ability to offer direct deposit, and its use had been had been discussed, we wanted it known that Lyman Hall would be willing to pilot direct deposit.

We support direct deposit because:

• It saves time on trips to the bank
• It saves gas, saving teachers money and helping the environment
• Many towns offer direct deposit as does the state of Connecticut and the federal government (including tax returns)
• There are no checks to be lost or stolen and payments reach accounts the day the check is issued---particularly important in light of increasing identity theft
• Many banks offer free or lower-cost checking for customers with direct deposit because it saves them the cost of processing paper checks

The benefits for the town are considerable:

• According to electronicpayments.org “…this comparison of the costs of paper checks vs. Direct Deposit payments, a company with 100 employees can save nearly $5,800 per year by switching to Direct Deposit, whereas a large business of 30,000 employees can realize over $1.6 million in annual cost savings.”

• Furthermore, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) endorses direct deposit, and Tamara Holmes writing for the NFIB argues that “companies can save approximately $0.50 to $0.60 per payment as a result of reduced paper processing costs. An indirect benefit of direct deposit is the increased satisfaction of employees, who no longer will have to wait for their checks to clear…” Miss Holmes notes that productivity often increases as employees need not rush to their financial institution on payday.

So it is with great excitement and expectation that Lyman Hall teachers hope the mayor and council will enable us to have the option of direct deposit. We think that Wallingford should take advantage of this opportunity as both the town (and its taxpayers) and its employees have much to gain with direct deposit. Town Council grants WPAA's request to use Parade grounds on May 24th
Please support the WPAA Community Building by visiting www.igive.com/wpaa registration is free. Everytime you make a purchase with the merchants through igive we make money. It is that simple and it's at no extra cost to you. You can also show your support by coming the parade grounds on South Main Street on Saturday May 24th at Noon. Our penny loving penguin will be on hand to accept any pennies you may have lying around. We will also Lego's so the children may construct their own buildings, which will be on display in our present window at 128 Center Street. We are also looking for a name for our penguin friend. Please send submissions along with your info to: chairman@7towntv.org. Winner will be announced on May 24th. This Event will be aired on WPAA. Rain location will be WPAA studio. I would also like to request your attendance at the May 27th Town Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Hall. The Council will be voting on our proposal.
